Dr. David Herold is a Board Certified Radiation Oncologist with both a clinical and business background. He has over 20 years of clinical radiation oncology experience and has managed both free standing and hospital based private practices. He has participated in clinical trials and chaired oncology executive committees, ethics boards, and research committees. Dr. Herold has had extensive experience with three-dimensional conformal radiation therapy, prostate seed implantation, high-dose rate temporary, and low dose rate brachytherapy. He has expertise managing a wide range of malignancies including lung, breast, head and neck, skin, gastrointestinal, hematologic, and gynecologic cancers.
In 2014 he was selected to pioneer a radiation oncology service line for Water’s Edge Dermatology , one of the fastest growing dermatology practices in South and Central Florida. Dr. Herold is wearing both a business and medical “hat” in his role at Water’s Edge Dermatology. Dr. Herold has single handedly pioneered a new specialty offering that allows patients to truly have a choice in skin cancer management options. No longer is surgery the only or even best option for management. Dr. Herold designed the program from the ground up. This is the very first program of its kind in Florida. He created the program model, oversaw planning and development, capital equipment design and sourcing, strategic planning, human resources and quality control. The program began less than 18 months ago with a single location and is now currently actively treating patients in two counties. Within the next six months the program is expected to expand to over five locations – serving hundreds of patients each year. Dr. Herold remains Medical Director and Department leader and is in charge of recruiting new staff and physicians to join his busy team. Dr. Herold is also an active educator and serves on Faculty of several dermatology societies and routinely speaks and educates physicians and community leaders on radiation-related management options. He strongly believes that patients have a right to know and understand their cancer treatment choices and he wants to be able to offer non-surgical options to patients who otherwise might have disfiguring procedures without being offered options.
Prior to joining Water's Edge Dermatology, Dr. Herold was senior partner and managing director of Advanced Radiation Oncology, PA, a medical corporation specializing in providing radiation oncology expertise and professional services to hospitals and private cancer centers and physician groups in South Florida. From 2006 to June 2014, Dr. Herold, as Medical Director and Senior Radiation Oncologist, led the Jupiter Medical Center Department of Radiation Oncology to achieve the official accreditation and stamp of approval from the American College of Radiology (ACR).
Dr Herold was trained in radiation oncology at Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia, PA, and was named Chief Resident of radiation oncology during his final year of residency. He was selected to do specialty training rotations at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, Texas, the Children's Hospital at the University of Pennsylvania, as well as Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, Philadelphia, PA.
He is board certified in Radiation Oncology and has published a number of studies in peer-reviewed journals including the International Journal of Radiation Oncology Biology & Physics, Radiation Oncology Investigations, and the Journal of Urology. He is an active member of the American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology and the American Medical Association, and has presented papers and lectured at national meetings.
